MULT – 270- 102, Introduction to Latin American Music Instructor: Kailbeth Chacin Title of Lesson (50 minutes): “America” the Continent; Popular, Classical and Traditional Music. Learning Outcomes: As a result of this lesson, students will: 1. Identify all three region of the American continent; and 2. Define Popular, Classical and Traditional music; and 3. Analyze the characteristics of Popular, Classical and Traditional music; and 4. Explain the importance of these three categories. Assessment of comprehension: Formative: In-class activities 1. The students will have an in-class written assignment that will require them to identify in a map all countries in the American continent. Groups of four or five students will be formed. Look For: The instructor will ask the students to create groups of four or five people to identify on a paper map all the countries of the American continent.
2. The students will have an in-class debate about the difference between Traditional Music and Folk music. Look For: The instructor will ask students to create arguments to defend either of the terms: traditional music or folk music, with the idea of making a statement about why people confuse these two topics. Summative: Homework 1. Students will be assigned to read C. Hess textbook, Chapter 2. 2. Students will create a song /musical piece list, with the music they listen to the most. Then they will need to classify them into the three categories studied in this lesson: popular, classical and traditional music. Look for: The instructor will look for understanding of the topic and the key characteristics of the three types of music explained in this lesson. Prior Knowledge: Student must show geographical knowledge, general culture and American (continent) general musical knowledge, which will be increased and developed in the course of the semester. The students will be asked to get together in groups of five, and decide which term they think should be used for the genre that we mostly play. -Minute 35 - 40: The instructor will proceed to open the floor for comments about their positions regarding the discussion. -Minute 40 - 45: Q&A -Minute 45 - 50: Review/ Wrap-up and Homework assignment for next class.
